This exciting, one-way adventure will see you traveling through the tempestuous straits of Gibraltar into the Atlantic. Once past the peninsula of Tarifa you will head north west past the haunting Trafalgar Banks where Admiral Nelson met his Nemesis and on toward Cadiz and Beyond to Chipiona. From here you will enter the mouth of the river Guadalquivir and head inland along the tricky reaches of the river to the City of Seville. There will be several stops in marinas along the coast to sample the Spanish hospitality and ensure your batteries are sufficiently charged. The Final leg from Chipiona to Seville is just over 60 miles (tidal) so a perfect skippered passage for aspiring yachtmasters!

During the trip we will cover a minimum of 180 nautical miles and experience the strong tidal streams in the Straits of Gibraltar and along the Spanish coast. There will most likely be some night sailing. The River Guadalquivir is heavily tidal and requires very careful navigation, not only to avoid the shallows but to avoid the commercial shipping and fishermen. Once into the upper reaches of the river there are some tricky tidal calculations required which your skipper will be happy to demonstrate.

You will arrive at your destination port of Marina Gelves, about 3 miles from the centre of Seville on Friday evening in time to head into the city for some relaxation.

Why not consider arriving in Gibraltar a day or so earlier and leaving Seville a day or two later. You can combine two city breaks and an exciting sailing trip with just one week off work! Hotels in both locations are plentiful and reasonably priced.

Alternatively, this adventure is part of a two way event, so you could consider doing the round trip from Gibraltar to Seville, a couple of days sightseeing and then the return leg from Seville to Gibraltar. Perfect for budding Yachtmasters in need of some milebuilding!

  • Absolutely incredible! Recently, I completed Jolly Parrot’s ‘Novice to Day Skipper’ course, and it was one of the best experiences of my life! Not only did I learn to sail, but the course also improved my confidence massively. The instructors were all so lovely and incredibly knowledgeable. Greg was my instructor for the Day Skipper portion and I couldn’t imagine anyone better suited for the job - An excellent instructor with impeccable humour. I met some amazing people during this course (namely my crew mates Bene, Doug and Flo), and overall had a wonderful time :)

  • 16-week Fast-Track I completed the 16-week Fast-Track program with Jolly Parrot, starting as a complete beginner with no prior sailing experience. From the moment I stepped aboard, the instructors—Ian, Greg, Rob, and Jason—became my guides, transforming my raw inexperience into something far more seasoned and confident. With their patience, skill, and unshakable belief in every student, they taught me far more than I could have imagined. If you’re considering joining, I can wholeheartedly recommend Jolly Parrot. The program is well-structured, and the instructors are highly knowledgeable, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to develop their sailing skills.

  • We spent a wonderful 11 days in November 2021 with Jolly Parrot. I completed the Coastal Skipper Combined course and my wife the Comp Crew. Instructors Flipper, IanG, Hailey, and Tom were all exceptional in their own unique way and we came away with more rounded skills and knowledge as a result of their patient teaching methods. Clive and Rachel did a fabulous job of shuffling schedules and boats to accommodate our different experience levels. Expect to be challenged on the Coastal Skipper course! We made some abiding memories, some long-term connections and friends, and hope to return soon for the next challenge maybe a mile-builder.
